The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) announced that they were putting $185,000 into an emerging pharmaceutical company in order for them to continue developing drugs to treat neurodegenerative diseases. This money will assist them in the development of the neuroprotective drug M30, which also prevents cell death and promotes neuron growth.

The FK506- binding protein has been implicated in a signaling pathway linked to neurodegeneration in Huntington's disease, as well as a number of other common disorders, including autism spectrum disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders. It's roles in learning, memory and immunosupprssion could lead to the development of new pharmaceutical approaches.

The Stowers Institute's Workman Lab has discovered a new histone demethylase protein complex dKDM4A, which acts on the Histone H3 protein. The protein complex serves key roles during protein transcription, and is known to interact with the Huntingtin protein, by adding methylation marks on histone H3K36, leading to the onset of the disease.

It has been discovered that Huntington's disease can actually improve performance in certain cognitive tests, having an increased reaction time and fewer errors than controls. The sufferers had been diagnosed with the faulty Htt gene but did not have any symptoms. It has been suggested that this is due to an increased glutamate sensitivity early on in HD, which eventually causes cells to die off. Due to glutamates role in sensory discrimination, this could lead to tests for new drus that...

The strengthening of antioxidant defences by therapeutics could lead to new methods of treating Huntington's disease. It has been found that oxidative stress and damage to certain macromolecules are involved in the progression of HD. Studies on the striatum and cortex discovered that the brains of HD patients had a larger number of enzymes related to antioxidant defence systems.
